책 소개

I was sick for two weeks가 말이 돼?
언젠가 학원에 다닌다는 분의 전화가 왔었다. 네이티브가 I was sick for two weeks라는 문장을 말하는 것을 듣고서 도저히 이해가 안돼서 전화를 걸었다고 한다. 「for+기간명사」나 「since+시점명사」가 문장에 있으면 시제는 have+pp의 현재완료가 되어야 하기 때문에 위 문장은 틀린 것이 아니냐고 문의를 하였던 적이 있었다. 

문법책이라고 모든 룰을 담을 수는 없어…
여기서 먼저 문법은 과연 무엇인가, 그 속성에 대해서 언급할 필요가 있다. 문법은 한 언어를 말하기 위한 룰의 집합체이긴 하지만 문법책 안에 모든 룰을 담을 수가 없고 또한 시시각각 변화하는 언어의 진화를 반영하지 못한다는 두 가지 맹점이 있다. 먼저 문법책에는 당연한 법칙 같은 것은 굳이 수록할 필요가 없을 것이다. 우리는 대표적인 룰만 모아놓은 문법책을 볼 뿐인데 마치 모든 룰이 담겨있는 절대법전과 같이 생각하는 경향이 있다. 우리는 줄창 계속해서 have+pp ~ for+기간명사라고 외웠기 때문에 I was sick for two weeks라는 문장을 봤을 때 불편해질 수밖에 없다. 그래서 이 문장은 문법에 어긋나는 틀린 문장이라고 결론 내린다. 그러나 현재완료의 특징이 뭐든가? 과거부터 현재까지 이어지는, 즉 시체말로 양다리를 걸치는 시제이다. I have been sick for two weeks는 따라서 2주전부터 지금까지 아프다는 이야기가 된다. 그리고 문법책에서는 나와 있지 않는 I was sick for two weeks는 지금 아픈지 안아픈지는 모르지만 과거 2주간 아팠다는 얘기가 된다. 다시말해 의미가 조금 다를 뿐 틀린 문장은 아니다라는 것이다. 

언어는 새장에 갇힌 새가 아니다
두번째 언어의 진화를 반영하지 못하는 문법책의 한계를 말해본다. 우리말의 경우를 봐도 예전에는 '없습니다'라고 쓰면 무식해보였지만 지금은 어떤가? 발음나는 대로 표기하기 위해 '없읍니다'를 '없습니다'로 정식으로 표기한다고 발표하였다. 이게 바로 언어의 진화이다. 언어는 새장에 갇힌 새가 아니다. 실험실의 실험관에 넣고 연구하는 학문이 아니다. 바로 우리들이 지금 여기서 쓰고 있는 살아있는 생물이다. 일상과 비즈니스 성격을 띈 문장을 다루는 TOEIC에서 All we can do is study harder for our next exam라는 문장을 보고 틀린 부분을 찾으라면 이구동성으로 ~is study~를 말할 것이다. 왜냐면 동사원형은 be 동사의 보어가 될 수 없기 때문에 ~is to study~라고 바꿔야 한다고 주장할 것이다. 언어의 진화를 언제나 따라가지 못하는 문법책에 의존했을 때 어쩔 수 없이 나타나는 현상이다. 그래도 이 부분은 많이 일반화되어서 일부 문법책에서는 언급하고 있는 사항이다. 구분없이 쓰이는 each other과 one another, 부정사의 부정이 not to+V가 to not+V의 형태로도 쓰이는 것도 그 단적인 예이다. 하나 더, I have gone to New York을 I have been to New York이라고 써야 한다고 주장하고 있다면 여러분은 아직도 과거의 문법책 족쇄에 얽매여 있다고 봐도 된다. 

문법의 한계를 넘어 실제 영어를 배워야…
이 책 <영어회화! 이거 알면 개이득!>은 이런 언급되지 않는 당연한 사항이나 아직 언어의 변화를 담지 못하는 문법책의 한계를 벗어나고자, 살아있는 실전에 직접 쓰이는 속칭 비문법적인 내용, 그리고 그 동안 모르고 썼던 뉘앙스의 차이 등을 담고 있다. 다섯 개의 Chapter에 '고정관념에서 탈피하기,' '미세한 차이에 주목하라,' '이거 모르면 낭패,' '영어를 영어답게,' 그리고 '알고 쓰면 더 편리한 표현들'이란 제목하에 문법책이나 어느 책에도 나와 있지 않는 내용들을 수록하였다. 221개의 수록된 내용만 이해하지 말고, 이를 토대로 언어의 속성을 간파해보고 또한 우리는 우리말을 지금 현재 어떻게 쓰고 있나 등을 역지사지 하면서 영어를 학문이 아닌 시시각각 변하는 기술이라는 점을 마음 속에 각인해두기를 바란다.
